What is Laser Assisted Spine Surgery?
Laser Assisted Spine Surgery (LASS) is a minimally invasive procedure that makes use of a laser to remove tissue with heat rather that with traditional instruments, without injuring surrounding soft tissue. As with other modern minimally invasive procedures, it can result in less scarring.

Yes! This is becoming the growing trend in healthcare and popular among patients seeking Laser Spine Surgery. We perform our surgeries at Modern Ambulatory Surgery Center, a state-of-the-art surgery center that offer concierge patient care and a welcoming experience to all our patients.
Sadly, not always. Some laser spine surgery groups allow doctors who are not Fellowship-trained in spine surgery to perform laser spine surgery. The problem with that is, while those doctors understand how to perform the surgery itself, they don’t always understand the condition of your spine, or the spine in general – and if something goes wrong they may not be able to fix it.
Highly likely. Our approach is customized to each individual patients and their situations. We don’t believe in “One size fits all” approach. Laser spine surgery can be successful because we use laser in conjunction with magnified high definition Microscope or Endoscope to directly visualize, then safely deliver the laser to the target tissues without damaging the surrounding nerves. These approaches may not be available at some other laser spine surgery practice and put the patients at risks. Unfortunately, some of the laser spine surgery groups do not own the microscope and/or spinal endoscope and put the patients at risks.
Yes, there are risks associated with laser spine surgery like any other surgeries/procedures. With the new laser technology, the energy of the laser can be adjusted so that it safe to use during spine surgery. In addition to using the real time Intra-operative X-rays, we routinely use either Microscope or Endoscope to identify the target. Intra-operative neuro-monitoring is also used during your surgery. In my opinion, laser spine surgery can be successful because I use laser in conjunction with magnified high definition Microscope or Endoscope to directly visualize and then safely deliver the laser to the target tissues without damaging the surrounding nerves. These approaches may not be available at some other laser spine surgery practice and put the patients at risks. Unfortunately, some of the laser spine surgery groups do not own the microscope and/or spinal endoscope and put the patients at risks.

And What’s beyond this that you should know?
During Dr. Thongtrangan’s fellowship at the world-renowned Stanford University Medical Center, he gained experience in complex spinal reconstruction, scoliosis, tumor and revision surgery for patients who have undergone previous spinal surgery without success. He then went on to complete an additional fellowship in Orthopedic Spine at the prestigious Texas Back Institute where he had an opportunity to focus on minimally invasive techniques and artificial disc replacement.
He’s also fellowship-trained in Adult Reconstruction at University of Minnesota where he mastered his surgical skills in hip and knee replacement and was fellowship-trained in Orthopedic Trauma at the Medical College of Virginia. As a resident at the esteemed Medical College of Virginia, he was given the ‘Best Resident Award’ based on his excellent patient care, surgical and teaching skills.
During his free time, Dr. T. loves watching and playing soccer, reading and cooking Thai food. He also loves traveling and learning about new cultures. He has a plan to perform mission work in Asia and South-East Asia.
